Article Icon 1Voters Head to Polls

Voters head to the polls today for a midterm election headlined by Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs’ reelection bid against Republican challenger U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs.

Voters will also decide on the state’s first-ever lieutenant governor, other statewide offices, congressional and legislative seats, state and local ballot questions, and local races. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters can expect dry, mild weather, though flooding concerns linger in parts of the state after weekend storms.

Preliminary results are expected tonight but won’t become official for weeks, as counties have until Nov. 19 to complete canvasses. The statewide canvass is due by Nov. 23.

This past weekend’s storms killed one person, dumped more than 6 inches of rain in some areas, and forced rooftop rescues, authorities said in their latest updates.

In Flagstaff, a 73-year-old New York man who fell into fast-moving floodwaters south of downtown Sunday evening was found dead Monday less than a mile away.

In Sedona, state emergency crews conducted at least six rooftop evacuations Sunday as Oak Creek swelled from about 3 feet to about 18 feet. At least 2,700 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the creek as floodwaters overwhelmed a pump station.

Elsewhere, Prescott Mayor Cathey Rusing declared a state of emergency after the Watson Lake Dam overtopped Sunday. Flooding closed several highways in the state.

Today host Savannah Guthrie renewed her plea for help finding her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who vanished from her Tucson-area home nine months ago.

Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department gave an update on the case, saying investigators traveled to Florida in October to meet with lab scientists about advancing DNA analysis in the case.

Authorities still have no suspect or person of interest, despite doorbell footage showing a masked man at her door. The sheriff’s department said even small tips could prove critical.

Nancy Guthrie’s family continues to offer a $1 million reward, and the FBI and 88-CRIME offer additional rewards.
