Search crews continued looking for a hiker missing since the deadly Aug. 29 flash flood at Grand Canyon National Park, where damage assessments continue.

North Rim businesses are absorbing a second straight disaster year, and Kaibab Lodge owner Larry Innes has laid off staff and sold his shuttle service.

The park asked visitors to bring their own water after the flood damaged the Transcanyon waterline, and some residents still lack running water.

Article Icon 1Four Killed in Head-On Crash

Two adults and two children died in a head-on collision Monday afternoon on State Route 260 near Heber-Overgaard.

Authorities identified those killed as Giovanni Uballe Huerta, 26, of Laveen; Kiah Jae Begaye, 26, of Mesa; and a 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl from Mesa. All were in the same vehicle.

Two others—a 14-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman from New Mexico—were riding in a pickup truck that struck the vehicle. Both were airlifted to hospitals with serious injuries.

The pickup’s driver, Jesse David Lovato, 21, of Los Lunas, New Mexico, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and aggravated assault. Public records state Lovato told investigators he fell asleep and that, the night before, he had smoked marijuana.

Communities across the state will host ceremonies, flag displays, and service projects this week to mark 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The 100 Club of Arizona will stage its annual Tower Challenge on Friday, sending participants up the stairs at State Farm Stadium to match the equivalent height of the World Trade Center.

In Oro Valley, the Arizona Heroes Memorial will hold a commemoration with moments of silence and a bell ringing marking each of the four attacks.

Phoenix will host a commemoration Thursday evening at Steele Indian School Park, where members of Arizona Task Force 1 will talk with young people.
