Rain Leads to Rescues and Travel Delays

Heavy rain caused widespread flooding across western Arizona, prompting multiple water rescues in Tonopah and Wickenburg.

In Cordes Lakes, a car was swept away in Big Bug Creek on Tuesday. A passenger was pulled to safety, but the 70-year-old driver remained missing.

As much as 3 inches of rain fell over 12 to 24 hours in areas.

The storms caused flight disruptions at Phoenix Sky Harbor, with ground delays issued on Tuesday and Wednesday.

100+ Schools Show Improvement

The state removed more than 100 K-12 schools from its low-performance list, citing gains in students’ academic proficiency.

Schools are placed on the state’s school improvement list when they fall among the lowest performers under federal and state accountability standards. They must follow targeted plans to raise achievement.

State school superintendent Tom Horne credited plans that focused on reading and math, along with the Project Momentum program, for helping students improve. 

Tesla Gets Ride-Hail Permit

Tesla received a permit from the state Department of Transportation to operate a ride-hail service, with additional approvals required for a full robotaxi rollout.

Tesla hopes to launch robotaxi services in Phoenix and other cities by the end of next year, entering a market where competitors such as Waymo already operate fleets.

Currently, Tesla is testing autonomous vehicles in Phoenix while running a pilot robotaxi program with human safety drivers in Austin, Texas. The company plans to remove the human drivers in its Austin pilot program later this year.

In Austin, Tesla’s and Waymo’s accident reports for September listed a combined 13 crashes, not all of which were the fault of the vehicles.
