Judge Orders Election Mediation

A judge ordered Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap and the county’s Board of Supervisors into mediation over who controls the county’s elections.

The long-running fight landed in Superior Court last summer after the election reform-minded Heap sued the board, claiming it illegally infringed on his authority. Judge Scott Blaney earlier found the supervisors had illegally stripped IT staff from Heap’s office.

Heap subsequently accused the board of ignoring the judge’s orders. Heap and the supervisors are set to meet with mediator Judge Christopher Coury on Monday, two days before primary election ballots are set to go out statewide.

Court Rejects APS Solar Fee

The state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that the Arizona Corporation Commission violated due process by imposing a monthly Grid Access Charge on roughly 200,000 rooftop-solar households served by Arizona Public Service.

The court found an earlier hearing on the case failed to cure the violation and ordered the commission to hold a rehearing on the fee or discontinue it. The charge averages about $2 to $3 a month.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, whose office brought one of the appeals, said solar customers were “blindsided by a rate hike that the public was never told about.” Commission Chairman Nick Myers said the panel will wait for legal guidance before acting.

9/11 Steel Beam on Tour

A 21-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center’s South Tower went on display in the Valley as part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America tour.

The beam, weighing about 16,000 pounds, will make stops in more than 20 states as part of the tour marking 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The beam was set for display Wednesday at the Hall of Flame firefighting museum in Phoenix and the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River.

“Some people may never get to New York, but we’re going to go to them,” Tunnel to Towers Foundation board member Brad Blakeman said.
