GOP Governor Candidates Debate

The four Republicans running to unseat Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs met Wednesday night in their only debate before the July 21 primary election.

U.S. Reps. Andy Biggs and David Schweikert shared the Scottsdale stage with businessmen Scott Neely and Ken Miceli. Biggs has President Trump’s endorsement and leads in polls.

On water, Biggs and Schweikert called Arizona’s situation a management problem rather than a shortage, while Neely and Miceli pushed desalination. Biggs backed the state’s new moratorium on tax breaks for water- and power-intensive data centers.

Hobbs has no primary challenger. Early primary voting starts Wednesday.

  One Missing After Flash Flood

A monsoon storm swept one person away and stranded others in a flooded Santa Cruz River tunnel at Interstate 19 and Ajo Way on Wednesday afternoon, in what one fire official called the largest swift-water rescue of his career.

On Thursday morning, the body of a 44-year-old woman was found. Authorities did not immediately confirm if she was the person missing from the day before.

Tucson Fire Deputy Chief Eric Jakoby said 11 people were caught around 5:30 p.m. and “simply did not know how hard it was raining.” A helicopter was dispatched immediately to search for the missing person.

Of the remaining 10 people, two were carried downstream and pulled back with throw bags, and the others were rescued by ladders. Rescue workers completed the full operation in about 10 minutes. All were adults.

The storm also toppled over 25 power poles and closed dozens of Pima County roads.

 America 250 Ingots Picked for Time Capsules

Two copies of a commemorative copper ingot stamped with Arizona’s America 250 logo are going into time capsules: one national and one in Glendale.

The logo is the work of Phoenix artist Riley Hammett, who won a state design contest in 2024 as a 17-year-old high schooler. The ingots were cast by Desert Lace Studios in Jer ome.

One went into Arizona’s part of America’s Time Capsule, alongside a 2008 state quarter and a letter from Secretary of State Adrian Fontes. That capsule is sealed and will be buried July 4 in Philadelphia, not to be reopened until 2276.

The other will go into a time capsule planned by Glendale following its discovery of a 1985 time capsule during renovation of its City Hall. The old capsule contained a phone book, a VHS tape, and kids’ letters. The new capsule will include the ingot, Arizona Cardinals memorabilia, and a Taylor Swift friendship bracelet.
