Article Icon 1State Rep. Presses Hobbs on Flood Emergency

State Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake, wants Gov. Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency after severe weather and flash floods tore through northern and eastern Arizona this week. Thunderstorms, floods, and hail hit the state with Navajo, Apache, Coconino, and Gila counties particularly affected.

Rescuers pulled 30 people from flooded homes in Dennehotso, a Navajo community in the Four Corners area. On the White Mountain Apache Reservation, about 50 people evacuated along Cibecue Creek, where floodwaters opened a 10-foot sinkhole in the main road.

The Hopi Tribe declared its own state of emergency Thursday after floodwaters displaced at least eight families in Moenkopi, near Tuba City. Arizona DPS helped rescue the last two people trapped there.

In an email to the governor’s office, Blackman wrote that the state can’t wait until lives are lost, citing his district’s long emergency routes and thin response resources. He sought $25 million in state aid for Gila County earlier this year after FEMA denied Hobbs’ request for federal help with 2025 flooding.

A Phoenix business owner who sold steroid-like drugs smuggled from China was sentenced to four months in federal prison, and a judge ordered his company shut down.

Prosecutors said Chinese manufacturers shipped the drugs as powders labeled as other products to slip past federal inspectors. The company mixed some into injectable liquids at its Phoenix warehouse and shipped them nationwide, including to an undercover federal agent in 2021.

Jeffrey McIndoo’s company, SARMS Pharm, made at least $3.5 million selling the drugs from 2017 to 2022. Known as SARMs, they mimic testosterone and anabolic steroids and aren’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

McIndoo pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge that carried up to a year behind bars, and the company pleaded guilty to smuggling conspiracy. Besides prison, he got a $1,000 fine and must report by Jan. 8; the company must forfeit $1.8 million.

Fall in Arizona brings festivals, rodeos, pumpkin displays, waterfront art installations, and some of the state’s biggest annual events. Now that the temperatures have cooled, here’s a roundup of standout events so you can get out and explore.

Ales on Rails in Clarkdale is Verde Canyon Railroad’s ode to Arizona’s craft beer scene and a great pick for couples and craft beer fans who want their fall festival with a side of scenery. It runs through Oct. 31.

Wrapping up on Nov. 1, Glowing Pumpkins in Chandler is a walk-through display of more than 5,000 hand-carved art pumpkins set to synchronized lights and music, while the Desert Fall Festival in Surprise features glowing pumpkins, an illuminated maze, ziplines, and apple cannons.

Next up, the Water Lantern Festival at Kiwanis Park in Tempe runs Nov. 6-8 featuring hundreds of decorated lanterns that will be released onto the water in one of the season’s most peaceful events. Meanwhile, Canal Convergence returns to the Scottsdale Waterfront Nov. 6-15, for 10 free nights of large-scale light art along the Arizona Canal. This year’s theme, “Western Nature,” ties into Scottsdale’s 75th year.

The Hondo Rodeo Fest returns Nov. 13-15 to Chase Field in downtown Phoenix for a celebration of Western culture, combining a professional rodeo, a street festival, and nightly country music concerts. This year’s lineup features country favorites including Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, and Parker McCollum.
