FBI Investigating Gunfire at ICE Building in Phoenix

The FBI is investigating after one or more unidentified people fired several rounds that struck the exterior of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations building on North Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix on the afternoon of July 14.

No injuries were reported, though the gunfire damaged windows at the federal facility. No motive or suspect information has been released.

The incident comes as the Department of Homeland Security reports rising assaults on ICE personnel and announces new body-camera requirements for arrest teams.

The FBI is asking witnesses to call 1-800-225-5324 or submit tips at tips.fbi.gov.

Former ASU President Lattie Coor Dies at 89

Lattie F. Coor Jr., who served as Arizona State University’s 15th president from 1990 to 2002, died Thursday evening at age 89, current ASU President Michael Crow announced. No cause of death was released.

Crow credited Coor with laying the foundation for the modern university, saying ASU’s growth in research, community partnerships, and public service was rooted in Coor’s vision and leadership.

A Phoenix-area native, Coor earned degrees from Arizona State College at Flagstaff and Washington University in St. Louis, and led the University of Vermont for nearly 14 years before returning home to ASU.

Coor Hall on ASU’s Tempe campus bears his name, honoring his legacy as an educator.

Colorado River Reservoirs Hit Nearly 70-Year Record Low

Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two largest U.S. reservoirs, have set a new record low for combined water storage—the smallest amount since May 1957, before Powell was built.

The reservoirs store Colorado River water serving nearly 40 million people across seven Western states, as well as tribes and agriculture. The findings come from a new paper by river experts.

Co-author Jack Schmidt of Utah State University called it a significant moment, saying the region is “truly in uncharted territory” and policymakers aren’t doing enough to reduce demand.

State negotiations between the seven states that share the Colorado River remain deadlocked over which users must cut back, and the federal government is expected to issue its own rules soon, potentially prompting lawsuits.
