Arizona taxpayers have paid more than $30 million since 2016 to settle lawsuits over alleged failures in the state Department of Child Services system.

The payouts include $750,000 to an autistic teen improperly removed from her family and abused in a group home, and $6.8 million to an unidentified abused minor.

Three recent child deaths have prompted further scrutiny of the state’s child welfare system. In one of the cases, DCS had received multiple reports of abuse and neglect over four years.

A malfunctioning electric door motor sparked a fire at the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee on Friday, with 10 staff members and two inmates treated for smoke inhalation.

Sheriff Mark Dannels said the 1985-built jail is overdue for major upgrades. “For years, we have been applying band-aids to challenges that require surgery,” he said.

In the electrical fire, toxic fumes filled a loading area and a hallway leading to the kitchen, prompting a lockdown. The fire was quickly contained.

The section of the jail remains closed while repairs and safety inspections continue.

Rising costs continue to drive up the average age of homebuyers and force many to delay or give up on homeownership, new reports show.

Leonidas Love, 39, of Phoenix, said high housing costs forced him to rent, noting that his childhood home in Seattle, which cost $18,000 in 1970, is now valued at $875,000. “The pricing now, it’s so hard to do everything by yourself. You need a roommate,” he said.

According to the National Association of Realtors, the median age of first-time buyers rose to 38 from 35 last year.

A Bankrate survey found that one in six potential buyers abandoned their home search in the past five years due to affordability challenges.

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why we recommend Incogni: They delete your info from the web, monitor for new threats, and keep erasing your data as new risks appear.
