State Schools Superintendent Tom Horne praised a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing parents to withdraw children from classes that clash with their religious beliefs.

The case began in Maryland’s Montgomery County, where parents sued to opt their children out of lessons featuring LGBTQ themes.

The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the parents in a 6-3 ruling on Friday.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote that while courts shouldn’t control school curricula, parents can opt out of lessons that infringe on First Amendment rights.

State and local groups will host a remembrance event today for the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died while battling Arizona’s Yarnell Hill Fire 12 years ago.

Only one firefighter survived after the fast-moving blaze trapped the crew in a canyon. It was the deadliest U.S. wildfire since 1933, when the Griffith Park Fire in L.A. killed 29 firefighters.

The ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. today at the Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial along State Route 89 in Yarnell, about 33 miles southwest of Prescott.

Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags at half-staff today in honor of the firefighters.

A new police report provides further details about the October 2024 failed plot by a group of fifth-grade girls in Surprise to kill a classmate while making it appear as a suicide.

The report says the four girls at Legacy Traditional School in Surprise plotted during recess on Oct. 1 to lure a boy into a bathroom and stab him.

Their plan to “just end him” over a breakup involved one girl planning to stab him and the others tasked with bringing a knife, writing a fake suicide note, and acting as lookouts.

The police report indicates all four will be expelled.
