Article Icon 1Report Details Groundwater Depletion

A report from NASA and Arizona State University shows Arizona’s groundwater is depleting at twice the rate of a decade ago.

Researchers attribute the water losses to heavy agricultural use, which accounts for about 72% of water use in the state, and extended La Niña climate patterns.

Last month, Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a law letting central Arizona farmers sell land and groundwater rights to help conserve water and support urban growth.

Amid reports of shrinking man-made lakes, state officials propose raising the dam at Bartlett Lake by 100 feet to restore storage capacity lost to sediment.

Article Icon 1Rent Hikes Hit Mobile Home Parks

Residents who live in manufactured home communities in Arizona are facing growing rent hikes that have some of them considering relocation.

This month, residents of Coppersun in El Mirage received notices that lot rents will increase from about $600 to $1,100.

Coppersun officials cited recent multimillion-dollar upgrades for the increase, while noting the availability of third-party rental assistance and concessions for longtime residents.

While Arizona has no rent caps, state law entitles mobile home owners to relocation funds if rent spikes exceed 10% plus the annual cost-of-living adjustment.

Article Icon 1Data Center Meeting Heats Up

A large group of residents turned out at Mica Mountain High School in Tucson for a heated debate over a proposed 290-acre data center dubbed Project Blue.

Supporters praised the $3.6 billion project’s promise of 180 jobs at the center and nearly 3,000 construction jobs over the next 10 years.

Critics cited the project’s high water needs, claiming that water demands could threaten the city’s long-term drinking water supply. Developers say overuse would result in penalties.

Union workers at the meeting voiced support for the project, countering some who questioned the lack of a union work agreement and accused the data center’s rumored main client, Amazon Web Services, of an anti-union record.

Dear Arizona Flyover Reader,

There’s never been a more important time to support The Arizona Flyover.

We’ve got a big announcement coming in a week, and I think you’re going to love it.

In fact, this is the last time we’ll ask for your direct support for a while.

Why?

I can’t say yet, but I can tell you that we could use a boost heading into the announcement. The Flyover family of email publications has grown from a scrappy startup to a new force in the news media landscape, and that’s all because of your support. Now, we’re ready to take things to the next level.

If you’d like to give directly to the news source that’s truly unbiased—that’s for you instead of against you, as the mainstream media typically is, this is your last chance for quite a while.

I can’t wait for you to find out about our plans for the future (look for a special message from our Founder next Monday), and I would very much appreciate your donation today.
