Article Icon 1SpaceX Eyes Data Center

SpaceX said at a community meeting that it is behind a proposed 747-acre data center campus in rural Cochise County that could create thousands of construction jobs.

The campus would include up to nine computing buildings and would draw up to 6 gigawatts of power at full build-out. The developer says servers would use dry-cooling technology, with no new well needed in the Willcox Active Management Area.

The county’s Planning and Zoning Commission scheduled a formal public hearing for Dec. 9.

Separately, SpaceX is set to retry a Falcon 9 launch from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base around 5:46 p.m. today, which Arizonans may be able to spot from Fountain Hills, South Mountain’s Dobbins Lookout, and other places.

Article Icon 1Flood Damage Far Exceeds $20M Fund

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said damage from historic flooding is far greater than a $20 million tribal fund set aside for equipment, road, and home repairs.

Initial assessments counted 500 damaged homes, with Chinle among the hardest hit. Rock Point families found at least a foot of water inside their homes, and the tribe reported 47 rescues.

Nygren said the tribe received requests for more than 600 road-related repairs after floodwaters washed out routes in Piñon, Dilkon, and Red Mesa.

Elsewhere, Sedona continues to assess flood damage, and State Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon remained closed with no reopening date.

Article Icon 1Heat Deaths Near Record

Maricopa County has confirmed 511 heat-related deaths this year, with more than 200 cases still under review.

The pending cases could push the toll past the county’s record of 645 deaths, set in 2023. Final totals aren’t expected until spring.

Health experts point to this year’s early start to extreme heat. Phoenix logged its hottest spring on record, with extreme heat arriving before some cooling centers opened.

Phoenix also recorded its second-hottest summer and remains on pace for its hottest year overall.
