Article Icon 1 Chips and Computers Lead Trade

Trade figures show computers and computer chips now rank alongside the traditional five Cs of copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate as one of the state’s economic pillars.

Last year, computers and electronics were Arizona’s biggest export product, with $19.6 billion worth shipped globally, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration.

The shift reflects a decade-long transformation driven by TSMC, Intel, Avnet, CIS Global, and others opening fabrication plants and offices across the state.

In recognition of Arizona’s key role in the chip economy, the state was recently named the Southwest hub for federal microelectronics education funding.

SEMI Foundation and the Arizona Commerce Authority will manage the hub, which will oversee grants in Arizona, Southern California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.

Article Icon 1  Phoenix Climber Dies on Everest

A climber who died on the way down after reaching the top of Mount Everest on May 20 was identified as a Phoenix-area man.

The death of Sandeep Are, originally from India, was reported by his climbing group, Boots and Crampons. He was one of two climbers who died on the mountain last week.

Are battled snow blindness—a painful condition caused by UV overexposure—while pressing on to the summit despite advice to turn back, climbing partner Tulasi Reddy said.

“He said, ‘No, it’s only an hour until summit. I will do it. I will make it,‘” Reddy said, describing Are as a “super strong climber” who previously completed a rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike.

Are summited and took photos to share with family, but his condition worsened on the descent. He was carried to the mountain’s Camp II, where he died.

Article Icon 1Stolen Diesel’s Location ‘Leaked’

Yavapai County sheriff’s deputies arrested two Las Vegas men after a leaking U-Haul led investigators to roughly 2,100 gallons of diesel stolen from Seligman gas stations.

Dachel Roberto Michel Campos, 37, and Jesus Daniel Rodriguez Yordy, 23, face burglary and theft charges, and investigators say they are also seeking a third suspect.

The case began last Friday when a Seligman gas station reported a significant fuel theft, and deputies soon learned a neighboring station had been hit the same night.

A deputy spotted a parked U-Haul matching the description of a suspect vehicle, noticed diesel leaking onto the street, then followed shoe prints to a nearby motel room.
