Chips and Computers Lead Trade
Trade figures show computers and computer chips now rank alongside the traditional five Cs of copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate as one of the state’s economic pillars.
Last year, computers and electronics were Arizona’s biggest export product, with $19.6 billion worth shipped globally, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration.
The shift reflects a decade-long transformation driven by TSMC, Intel, Avnet, CIS Global, and others opening fabrication plants and offices across the state.
In recognition of Arizona’s key role in the chip economy, the state was recently named the Southwest hub for federal microelectronics education funding.
SEMI Foundation and the Arizona Commerce Authority will manage the hub, which will oversee grants in Arizona, Southern California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.
