Governor candidate Andy Biggs and local congressman Paul Gosar are among the Republicans set to speak at a rally President Trump will headline today at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport.

Congressional candidate and former Pinal County sheriff Mark Lamb is also scheduled to speak. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and Trump is set to speak at 1 p.m.

All registered ticket holders must use designated shuttle buses to access the event, according to Bullhead City police. No walk-up entries will be allowed. Some road closures and other traffic restrictions will take place.

Article Icon 1 Sheriffs Clash over Border Protests

Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway defended his decision not to assist federal immigration authorities in responding to disruptive protesters.

The Arizona Sheriffs’ Association on Friday accused Hathaway of refusing requests for help, and the group’s president, Navajo County Sheriff David Clouse, said Hathaway’s actions “raise serious concerns” about public safety and the fulfillment of sheriffs’ duties under state law.

Hathaway called the requests for help “disingenuous” and criticized agents for “dragging protesters away.” He said he is no longer a member of the sheriffs’ association.

Separately, police reported finding broken windows and graffiti last week at the Tempe offices of Fisher Industries, a contractor building a border wall in Santa Cruz County.

Article Icon 1Rain Raises Drought Relief Hopes

Above-average rain has kept Salt River Project reservoirs near 50% full, and forecasters say a strong El Niño could bring high-country snow to help with the state’s drought.

Still, forecasters say even a potentially record-strong El Niño won’t guarantee heavy snow or end the state’s long-term drought.

This past weekend brought more damaging storms, including flash flooding that swept away a Jeep and stranded at least eight people in Mohave County on Sunday. The off-grid Desert Bar near Parker closed for the first time in 43 years, with plans to reopen this weekend.

In Sedona, officials on Monday placed the city on “ready” status for possible evacuation and closed Oak Creek Cliffs Drive due to flooding.
