Sun Devils to Make London History

Arizona State faces Kansas at Wembley Stadium on Saturday in the first FBS football game ever played in the United Kingdom.

The Sun Devils flew to London from Texas after this past weekend’s game with Texas A&M and held their first practice session Tuesday.

Incoming ASU freshman Shelby Connell is making the trip for a different reason: she starts classes at ASU’s new London campus this fall.

ASU athletic director Graham Rossini called the telecast from Wembley “a four-hour showcase of what’s going on at ASU” and a platform for the school’s global ambitions.

Billed as the Union Jack Classic, the game kicks off at 9 a.m. Arizona time on FS1 and counts as the Big 12 opener for both teams.

 Mesa Approves $3B Gateway Project

Mesa City Council voted unanimously to approve the Legacy Park and Gateway Crossing development, a roughly 200-acre, $3 billion mixed-use project billed as the largest in the city’s history.

Plans from developer Vestar include hotels, a public lake and park, retail, restaurants, and office space near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. City officials project nearly $60 billion in total economic output and more than 13,000 jobs over 30 years.

The project also involves annexing land from Maricopa County and rezoning about 196 acres from light industrial to a planned community district, clearing the way for about 2,400 apartments.

Vestar said it plans to break ground on public infrastructure in January 2028, start vertical construction in June 2028, and open the first phase in October 2029.

Fall Color Season Begins

Arizona’s high country is beginning its annual turn, and veteran leaf peepers are recommending sites across the state to visit from now through early December.

The highest elevations on the San Francisco Peaks typically start changing in mid-September, with color descending into Flagstaff through October and lingering in Oak Creek Canyon well into November.

Arizona Highways lists Aspen Corner—5 miles up Snowbowl Road—as a late-September-to-mid-October stop, with a later option being Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, which peaks between mid-November and early December.
