$100M Rebuild of AZ Highway to Rocky Point

Mexico’s federal government is investing roughly 1.8 billion pesos, about $100 million, to fully rebuild Highway 8 between the Lukeville-Sonoyta border crossing and Puerto Peñasco, a popular south-of-the-border beach destination for Arizonans.

Construction began Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo, who secured the funding in negotiations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The plan includes wider lanes and berms along the roughly 60-mile corridor.

The road will stay open during work expected to run through May 2027. The project also upgrades the border entrance at Sonoyta, where the highway begins for Arizona travelers.

Puerto Peñasco’s visitor count fell from 1.9 million in 2024 to 1.6 million in 2025, and local tourism officials cited deteriorating road conditions as a contributing factor.

Attorney Claims ASU Ignored Heat Safety Policy

An attorney for the family of Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich alleges the university failed to follow its own heat-safety policies during an Aug. 20 outdoor workout that left the 21-year-old hospitalized and incapacitated with recovery highly unlikely.

ASU guidelines call for gradually acclimatizing athletes over seven to 14 days, but Mayich had been in Arizona less than a week. Temperatures neared 88 degrees during the “military-style” session led by a former Green Beret.

The family’s attorney says water was limited to top performers, no cooling station was ready, and players fear retaliation. They are demanding an independent investigation, calling ASU’s internal review a conflict of interest.

ASU says coaches and trainers were present and that it has heat-illness guidelines in place. University police and a separate administrative review are examining the circumstances. The trainer’s lawyer denies the workout was extreme.

Arizonans Pick ADOT Highway Safety Messages

Two Phoenix-area residents saw their slogans light up Arizona highway signs Friday after winning the Arizona Department of Transportation’s 2026 Safety Message Contest, decided by public vote.

Glendale resident Kelsey Turnquist submitted “Main characters always wear seatbelts,” aimed at younger drivers. Ahwatukee resident Michelle Dixon wrote “Don’t be a statistic, don’t drive ballistic,” hoping the rhyme prompts drivers to reconsider risky choices.

More than 3,900 votes were cast among 10 finalists drawn from over 1,700 entries. The winners visited ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center to enter their messages into the overhead sign system.

Both messages will display through the weekend. ADOT Director Jennifer Toth said roughly 90% of crashes stem from driver decisions such as speeding, distraction, or impairment.
