Leaders Pleased with River Plan

The state’s top water negotiator said he is pleased with the federal Colorado River plan, which avoided the deepest cuts feared.

Tom Buschatzke said the reductions provide stability while longer-term negotiations continue. He also noted Arizona could still sue if it believes later guidelines violate its legal right to Colorado River water.

Danny Seiden, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, called the plan a workable path that avoids the most damaging scenarios.

Under the plan, Arizona will give up 760,000 acre-feet a year in 2027 and 2028, a 48% increase over current reductions, with the Central Arizona Project absorbing a 50% cut.

Extreme Heat Holds Grip

Phoenix hit 115 degrees Saturday, breaking a 15-year-old daily record as forecasters extended the area’s extreme heat warning into next weekend.

Southern Arizona faces the same pattern, with Tucson’s extreme heat warning extended through Saturday as highs near 110 degrees return midweek.

Saturday’s daily record high at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport topped the 113 degrees set in 2011. Little rain is expected across the Valley amid the heat wave.

Nearly 90% of Arizona remains in moderate or severe drought, down from extreme drought levels following recent rainstorms.

Restaurants Chase First Michelin Stars

Arizona restaurants are in the running for their first Michelin stars when the guide holds its inaugural Southwest ceremony Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Anonymous inspectors spent months judging restaurants across Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The awards ceremony takes place at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

Scottsdale chef Alex Stratta said the recognition will lend credence to Southwest cooking and give Arizona chefs a professional goal, calling it a substantial chapter for the state’s food scene.

The guide has long weighed high-quality ingredients, consistent execution and storytelling through food, and chefs now also work to convey a restaurant’s personality, Stratta said.
