Colorado River Plan Finalized, Steep Cuts for AZ

The Interior Department finalized a Colorado River plan ordering steep cuts for Arizona, California, and Nevada, with Arizona losing 760,000 acre-feet—about 30% of its allocation.

The reductions last two years while long-term talks continue. Officials noted the cuts could have been worse, and the plan spares Central Arizona Project supplies from further reductions.

Arizona officials warned of a possible lawsuit over the plan, while Phoenix has tapped an emergency water bank to offset losses.

Meanwhile, Nevada struck a $16.25 million deal to keep water in Lake Mead as officials warn of a bleak future for the shrinking river.

Mayes Declines to Charge Hobbs After Investigation

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes cleared Gov. Katie Hobbs of wrongdoing, finding no evidence of bribery in allegations involving Sunshine Residential Homes.

The probe examined claims of a pay-to-play arrangement linking campaign contributions to state actions benefiting the group home company.

Mayes said investigators found no evidence of a quid pro quo and declined to prosecute, while urging reforms to campaign finance and procurement practices.

The attorney general’s office released its findings publicly, closing the years-long inquiry into the governor.

Puppy Named Tillman to Become Free Service Dog

A yellow Labrador retriever puppy named Tillman is training to become a service dog, honoring the Army Ranger and former Arizona State University and Arizona Cardinals player Pat Tillman.

The 10-week-old pup is being co-raised through a partnership among America’s VetDogs, a national nonprofit that provides service dogs to veterans, first responders, and active-duty service members; the Pat Tillman Foundation, a national nonprofit empowering military service members, veterans, and spouses through scholarships, leadership development, and a supportive community; and GOVX, a members-only platform that provides exclusive savings and benefits to military members, veterans, and first responders.

Over 16 to 18 months, Tillman will train at foundation offices, community events, and Chicago-based professional sporting events before being matched, free of charge, with a disabled veteran, first responder or service member.
