Article Icon 1 Funding Deal Advances; Swearing-In Nears

A deal to end the partial federal government shutdown passed by a 60-40 vote late Sunday, with Arizona Democratic U.S. Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego voting against the measure.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, D-Tucson, headed to Washington, D.C., for her swearing-in ceremony, with the U.S. House now expected to reopen.

Kelly and Gallego said they voted against the deal to end the shutdown because it lacked an agreement to increase Affordable Care Act subsidies.

U.S. Rep. Eli Crane, R-Flagstaff, criticized Kelly and Gallego, accusing them of putting party over constituents and siding with health insurance executives.

Article Icon 1Trump Pardons Alternate Electors

President Trump pardoned alternate electors and other allies who faced federal prosecution after President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state.

The accused called the charges politically motivated, with the alternate electors saying they were preparing in case ongoing election litigation showed Trump won Arizona.

In Arizona, Democratic state Attorney General Kris Mayes faces a Nov. 21 deadline to either revive or dismiss her state case against the electors, and recent commentary suggests she is poised to drop the prosecution.

Nationally, Trump granted similar pardons to others, with the White House press secretary saying those pardoned “were persecuted and put through hell by the Biden administration for challenging an election, which is the cornerstone of democracy.”

Article Icon 1State Ranked Last for Young Families

A study ranked Arizona as the worst state in the nation for starting a family based on education, health, and cost-of-living metrics.

The Ivy Surrogacy study cited the state’s low high school graduation rate and high rate of vehicle fatalities. Other measures included income and cost of living.

“For more Americans to choose to start families, they need to feel more secure that they can provide children with healthy, happy, and prosperous lives. Some parts of America offer more favorable conditions than others,” the study’s authors said.

The study also included Washington, D.C., which scored below Arizona.
