U of A Among Colleges Courted by White House

The White House asked the University of Arizona to consider an agreement to align with the Trump administration’s college priorities in exchange for enhanced federal funding.

Offered initially to nine universities, the Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education sets forth policies on admissions, women’s sports, tuition caps, free speech, and discipline.

The University of Texas, the University of Virginia, and MIT are among the other colleges invited to take part. It was not immediately known if other schools would be asked.

University of Arizona officials said they learned of the compact this week and are reviewing its provisions, which also cover international student limits and testing requirements.

DNA Linked Suspect to Teen Murders

A man was arrested in the May fatal shootings of two Phoenix Valley teenagers near Mount Ord.

Thomas Brown, 31, of Chandler, was arrested on Oct. 2. He remained in jail in lieu of a $2 million cash-only bond ahead of a court hearing on Wednesday.

Investigators say Brown’s DNA was discovered on the victims’ vehicle and on gloves at the scene. Brown told police he saw the teens once and that, later, he came across some of their supplies. Authorities did not release information about a possible motive.

The victims, 18-year-old Pandora Kjolsrud and 17-year-old Evan Clark, were found dead from gunshot wounds while camping.

Former ASU Student Wins Heroism Award

Former Arizona State student Owen Emmons was awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism after rescuing his childhood friend from a burning car following a 2021 crash.

The single-vehicle crash in Newport Beach, California, left Emmons’ friend, Jackson Gutierrez, unconscious as the vehicle burned. Gutierrez lost both legs and faced months of recovery.

Emmons downplayed the heroism, saying, “I just wanted to be the person there for my friend. I know if the roles were reversed, he would do the same for me.”
