Labor Market Slips

Arizona lost 4,100 jobs in August, the steepest monthly decline since October and the state’s second monthly loss this year.

The state’s labor force participation rate fell below 60%, its lowest level in more than a decade. The statewide jobless rate was flat at 4.9%, while the national unemployment rate held at 4.1%.

Job losses included nearly 1,600 professional positions and 2,000 government jobs, mostly in education. Goods production and healthcare posted gains.

Some areas of the state report stronger job markets. In Mesa, economic development director Jaye O’Donnell said the city is developing new marketing strategies to promote its rapid growth.

Sky Harbor Picks Anchor Airline

American Airlines will anchor the estimated $4.5 billion West Terminal planned for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the airport announced.

Construction could begin in late 2029 near former Terminals 1 and 2, with the first phase opening in late 2033. “Phoenix is a critical part of American’s network, and we’re excited to continue to invest in the airport and this region’s future,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said.

Aviation Director Chad Makovsky said the expansion will add gates, customs space, and airline lounges for international travelers.

Sky Harbor expects about 90 million annual passengers by 2050, up from 51.6 million last year.

Colleges Tie in Rankings

Arizona State University and the University of Arizona tied for 121st among national universities in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report rankings released Tuesday.

Last year, ASU ranked 117th and UA placed 127th, though U.S. News said methodology changes make this year’s list not directly comparable. In the 2025 edition, UA led the state, tied for No. 109.

Northern Arizona University placed 242nd, while Grand Canyon University does not share the data used in the rankings. This year, ASU also ranked No. 1 among Most Innovative Schools, according to U.S. News.
