Article Icon 1County Targets Unlicensed Taco Stands

Maricopa County’s three-month crackdown on unlicensed street taco vendors resulted in dozens of enforcement actions and the seizure of more than 7,000 pounds of potentially unsafe meat.

The county reported 55 food seizures from May to July, many targeting sidewalk and street vendors selling “tacos al pastor”—spit-grilled meat—prepared outside using vertical rotisseries and fold-up tables or pop-up tents.

Such practices aren’t permitted and could potentially cause illness, according to county health officials, who urged residents to report unpermitted food vendors.

Two business owners launched a petition opposing the proposed STAR Village homeless encampment in Tucson, with many others also voicing concerns.

Derek and Lindsey Dooley of Tucson Tattoo are leading the petition drive, citing safety issues and a lack of community input.

More than 300 people have signed the petition, which calls for area residents and businesses to be included in planning solutions for homelessness.

STAR Village, set to open in October at 244 E. Grant Road in Tucson, would provide an outdoor sleeping space for up to 25 homeless people.

Fort Huachuca is partnering with local schools through the Purple Star Program, which helps schools focus on providing support for military-connected students.

Garrison Commander Mike Childs has championed the program, which provides staff training, hosts military family events, and offers peer mentorship for students.

Schools also receive guidance on recognizing and assisting students who may be struggling.

The Center of Academic Success in Sierra Vista said the program also helps schools attract more students by showing military families that their children will be supported.
