Article Icon 1Unemployment Appeals Pile Up

The state unemployment department faces a backlog of about 10,000 appeals, with some dating back to 12 months ago.

Appeals are filed by people denied benefits or who disagree with the department’s decisions.

The department attributed the backlog to increased claims and federal funding cuts that reduced staff.

The agency said it’s working to address the delays and improve scheduling, training, and system efficiency.

Article Icon 1Neighborhood Hero Honored

A Sierra Vista man received the city’s first-ever Sentinel of Life Award for his April rescue of a man from a house fire.

David Escobar, 28, was out for a walk in his neighborhood when he saw smoke in the distance and heard a cry for help.

He rushed into the burning home and pulled a man outside. Despite his efforts, the man later died of smoke inhalation at a Tucson hospital.

Escobar said the events left him with mixed emotions, but that he was honored by the award and that he’s now pursuing a career in nursing.

Article Icon 1Water Officials Eye Desalination

Desalination projects along Mexico’s Sea of Cortez are among the proposals Arizona is exploring to increase the state’s water supply.

Desalination removes salt and other minerals from seawater, making it safe for drinking, agriculture, or industrial use.

The proposals come as negotiations over Colorado River allocations remain stalled.

Water officials say combining desalination with wastewater treatment upgrades, groundwater storage, and conservation partnerships could provide long-term water security for Arizona.
