Phoenix Falls Off Global 100 Rankings

Phoenix dropped off a list of the top 100 cities in the world after years of slipping in the rankings. The city peaked at No. 49 in 2020.

The study by Resonance Consultancy uses data and surveys to evaluate cities on 46 factors, including air quality, transit, health, and nightlife.

London earned the top ranking. Top-ranked U.S. cities include New York City (No. 2), Los Angeles (No. 12), Miami (No. 26), San Francisco (No. 28), Chicago (No. 35), and Las Vegas (No. 55).

Phoenix’s exclusion continues a bumpy run for the city and Arizona in such studies, including a report that ranks Arizona as the worst state to raise a family.

State: Teacher Shortage Ongoing

The state Department of Education reported that 1,055 teachers have resigned since July, with more than 4,200 teaching positions now vacant statewide.

Arizona School Superintendent Tom Horne called the situation “intolerable” and blamed low pay and a lack of school leaders’ support for classroom discipline.

Vacant positions are being staffed by student teachers, teacher candidates awaiting certification, international teachers, and individuals with alternative credentials.

Teen Revives Fallen Marine’s Garden

A Sierra Vista teen restored a memorial garden honoring a fallen U.S. Marine corporal as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Ayden Barcley spent six months revitalizing the garden at Carmichael Elementary School, adding touches such as a lavender rose for the soldier’s Purple Heart.

“It was run down. No one was taking care of it, and it’s a garden dedicated to him, so it had to be restored,” Barcley said.

The garden honors Cpl. Philip McGeath of Glendale, who died in 2012 while serving in Afghanistan.
