Article Icon 1Electors Case Sent Back to Grand Jury

Arizona’s electors case will head back to a grand jury after a Maricopa County judge said the Republican defendants were denied procedural rights.

Judge Sam Myers said state prosecutors failed to present the grand jury with language related to the Electoral Count Act. The law governs the certification of a presidential contest and is part of the defendants’ claims that they were acting lawfully.

Jurors also must determine whether there’s probable cause that the defendants committed crimes before the case can proceed, the judge said.

A spokesman for Democratic state Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement that prosecutors “vehemently disagree with the courtand plan to appeal.

Article Icon 1Report Details School District Overspending

A 26-page report details the financial collapse of Phoenix’s Isaac School District, which was forced into state receivership after overspending its budget by more than $20 million.

Ryan Anderson, attorney for the receiver, said the report shows the district misspent COVID funds, improperly moved money between accounts, and inaccurately reported spending.

Anderson called the district’s financial mismanagement “the worst” he’s seen.

Last week, the school district’s governing board agreed to shut down two elementary schools to save money.

Article Icon 1Law Allows Earlier Construction Hours

A new state law aimed at protecting workers from extreme heat allows construction to begin as early as 5 a.m. on weekdays from May 1 to Oct. 15, overriding local ordinances.

The law allows Saturday construction to begin at 7 a.m. and end at 7 p.m., while local jurisdictions can still determine working hours on Sundays.

Supporters of the law say the earlier start will reduce heat-related illnesses, while critics worry about noise disruptions in residential areas.
