Phoenix Sinking? Less Groundwater Cited

A report says Phoenix is sinking by one millimeter per year, or about the thickness of a credit card, due to increased use of groundwater.

Arizona State University science professor Kip Hodges agreed with the findings, saying the groundwater is currently being used faster than it can recharge.

The rates of sinking differ in each Phoenix Valley community depending on water demands, Hodges said. Over time, continued sinking could damage infrastructure.

The report builds on previous studies, including one that found the town of Wenden has dropped 18 feet in elevation in the past 80 years. 

‘Forever Chemicals’ Elevated in Health Workers

A University of Arizona study found healthcare and rescue workers in the state with elevated levels of “forever chemicals” linked to cancer and other health issues.

The research, published on May 8, marks the first time the synthetic chemicals, known collectively as PFAS, were measured in healthcare workers.

Jeff Burgess, a health official with the university, said the workers’ protective gear may be exposing them to the chemicals.

The study collected data from July 2020 through April 2023 from healthcare workers, first responders, and other essential workers.

State Climbs to No. 3 in Aerospace and Defense

Arizona now ranks as the third most-attractive location in the U.S. for aerospace and defense manufacturing and investment, according to an industry report. 

Arizona moved up three spots from its prior ranking, positioning it behind Texas and Florida.

The annual rankings by pWc examine factors such as cost, labor, infrastructure, industry, economy, and tax policy.

Arizona scored particularly well for the depth of the industry across the state, which is home to companies such as Raytheon, Bombardier, and Northrop Grumman.
