The race for an open congressional seat is heating up, with 13 candidates from four political parties filing statements of interest as of Tuesday. See the candidate list.

The candidates are vying to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Tucson, who died last week at age 77 after a battle with cancer.

The candidates include Daniel Butierez, who is making his second bid for the seat. Grijalva’s daughter, Adelita, is also considering a run.

Grijalva was honored with a vigil this week in Tucson.

Brandon Rieck credits nearby friends for rescuing his wife and their 2-year-old child when the family’s box truck home began flooding in Oak Flat Campgrounds during last week’s heavy rainstorms. Watch a video of the flooding.

Prior to the friends’ arrival, Rieck, who was working in Tennessee, received a frantic call from his wife as water entered the home.

And so I kind of just walked her through removing the batteries and, unfortunately, that meant shutting off all the lights in the truck,” he said.

Rieck said he hopes the campground will add signs warning of floods.
