A pickup truck burst into flames after being rear-ended by a cement mixer yesterday morning on US 60 in Mesa, creating a seven-car pileup and a miles-long delay. Watch the footage here.

A Chandler motorcycle officer broke the pickup truck’s window and pulled the driver to safety with the help of an off-duty firefighter. The woman suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Drivers were rerouted off the highway as first responders worked the scene, where black smoke was visible for miles. Nobody else was seriously hurt. All lanes of traffic reopened before 9 a.m.

Article Icon 1Maricopa Inmate Dies From Overdose

A Maricopa County inmate died after a drug overdose at the all-women’s Estrella Jail, where a total of 12 overdoses were reported in the last week.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is calling it an “inmate-driven” problem, and a video report says inmates are smuggling drugs in by placing them inside their bodies. X-ray machines are set to be used moving forward.

The news comes about a month after Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan announced jail employees would no longer be scanned for drugs or contraband before entering the facility.

In addition, lawmakers are pushing for a new bill that would allow police to shoot down drones suspected of smuggling drugs like fentanyl into the state across the southern border, as cartels increasingly use them to bypass checkpoints.

The City of Scottsdale is seeking certification as a Blue Zone, a region where people live longer and healthier lives than average due to healthy community initiatives.

Cities that qualify take a holistic and proactive approach to health, placing emphasis on community engagement in things like exercise and healthy food choices.

National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner identified Blue Zones while researching demographics in various regions of the world.

The five original Blue Zones are primarily overseas, but there are now more than 70 certified cities in the U.S.
