An investigation continued into an alleged drunk driver who drove through a Christmas parade in Kayenta on the Navajo Nation on Monday, striking four people and killing at least one person.

The identity of the person killed was not immediately released. Among the injured were a young child in critical condition and a pregnant woman. Damaged vehicles and property were also reported.

Authorities arrested an unidentified driver, who is expected to face charges. The vehicle entered the parade route about 5 p.m., as bystanders were waiting for the parade to start.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said of the incident, “No one should have to experience tragedy during a season meant for love and togetherness.”
