Campuses Fill For Fall

The state’s college campuses are filling back up, and the businesses around them are gearing up for a surge of customers.

The University of Arizona celebrated dorm move-in day Tuesday, welcoming families from across the state and country to Tucson. Move-in continues through Saturday, with classes set to begin on Monday.

Last week, Arizona State began welcoming more than 16,000 first-year students across its four campuses. ASU classes start Thursday.

Arizona Western College in Yuma started classes Monday with its 4,591 students also busy finalizing parking passes, laptop setups, and ID photos.

High Schools Crack Top 100

Thirteen charter and public high schools in the state landed among the nation’s top 100 in new U.S. News rankings released Tuesday.

BASIS Oro Valley placed 15th nationally, and University High School in Tucson came in at 50th, out of roughly 18,000 ranked schools.

Charter campuses again drove the state’s showing, as they did a year ago when BASIS Tucson North topped the national list.

Diamondbacks Under Pressure

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost their All-Star second baseman and a lopsided game on the same night in Boston, adding to the strain of a tight playoff chase.

Second baseman Ketel Marte did not appear in the team’s 11-1 loss Monday, with manager Torey Lovullo citing a personal issue. Marte returned to Arizona on Tuesday for an MRI on his left knee.

Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll provided a lift, winning National League Player of the Week honors for his recent run. For the season, his 15 triples are more than twice the total of any other MLB player.

The Diamondbacks, one game out of a wildcard spot entering play Tuesday, ranked No. 9 in ESPN’s latest power rankings. The team activated reliever Justin Martinez and outfielder Jordan Lawlar to add depth for the final weeks.
