Article Icon 1Hobbs Signs School Junk Food, Cell Phone Bills

Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a pair of education bills into law, one aimed at eliminating junk food from school cafeterias and the other limiting students’ cell phone usage.

House Bill 2484 bans cell phone use in classrooms except for emergencies, medical conditions, and teacher-directed academic use. The law will go into effect 90 days after this year’s legislative session ends.

We’ve drawn a clear line: Arizona classrooms are for learning, not TikTok,” said the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Beverley Pingerelli, R-Phoenix.

Hobbs also signed House Bill 2164, which removes foods and drinks containing ultra-processed ingredients from cafeterias across the state.

Article Icon 1Fire Ravages Student Union

Fire heavily damaged the Student Union Building at Diné College on the Navajo Nation overnight Sunday, prompting a shift to virtual learning. See the photos.

Records dating back to the 1950s were consumed by the fire, as were caps and gowns to be worn by this year’s graduating class. The fire interrupted propane service, leaving housing on the campus without heating and cooking capabilities.

The blaze was reported about 2:15 a.m. Monday. While crews responded promptly, the school’s remote location and lack of a local fire station complicated containment efforts.

The Navajo Police Department is investigating the cause.

Nvidia will use advanced semiconductor chips made in Arizona as part of its plan to produce artificial intelligence supercomputers entirely in the U.S. for the first time, the company announced.

The company will build supercomputer production plants in Texas and partner with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and other companies on chips. TSMC recently began production on advanced Blackwell AI chips in Phoenix.

In a blog post, Nvidia said it expects to invest $500 billion within the next four years to expand its U.S. manufacturing to help the company and its partners grow “while expanding their global footprint and hardening supply chain resilience.”
