Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes joined 22 other state attorneys general in backing NPR and PBS in their bid to block President Trump’s executive order aimed at stripping the broadcasters of federal funding.

In May, Trump signed an executive order to halt funding for what he and Republicans term wasteful spending on biased and politically partisan news outlets. The U.S. House later voted 214-212 for the cuts, and a U.S. Senate vote is slated for July.

Mayes, a Democrat, praised the broadcasters’ educational programming and aligned with others who say that defunding them could disrupt their participation in services such as the Emergency Alert System and Amber and Silver Alerts.

Article Icon 1Patrols Increase on Deadly Highway

State troopers announced plans to boost patrols along a narrow stretch of State Route 260 between Show Low and Payson after four fatal crashes in the past two weeks.

The section of two-lane roadway has no shoulders or pull-outs and regularly sees heavy summer traffic as travelers head to recreation areas. The state cited an “unusually high” number of crashes in the area, with many attributed to driver error.

A planned construction project to widen the route is scheduled to begin next spring.

Payson Mayor Stephen Otto urged drivers on the highway to stay off their phones and to watch the road, saying, “We’re killing people up here. Regularly.”

Several players with Arizona ties made big contributions on the court as Oklahoma City defeated Indiana 103-91 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

For Oklahoma City, former Perry High School standout Jalen Williams tallied 20 points, and Arizona State’s Luguentz Dort racked up nine points and seven boards.

For Indiana, former University of Arizona stars Bennedict Mathurin and T.J. McConnell kept the team competitive. Mathurin posted 24 points and 13 rebounds, while McConnell scored 16 points.

Like many of his teammates, McConnell was visibly emotional after the loss.
