A 51-year-old Yuma man died while rescuing two children in the Colorado River on Saturday near Hidden Shores Resort.

Reports say the man, Jeffrey Brady, was with a group at the Horseshoe Island sandbar when the river’s current swept the children from the shallows around noon.

Brady jumped in to help the children, keeping them afloat until a vessel arrived and rescued them. He then went underwater and never resurfaced.

Multiple agencies searched for Brady, whose body was found at 7:20 p.m.

Article Icon 1Bill Targets Gray Wolf Protections

A bill from U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Goodyear, aims to end endangered species protections and repopulation efforts for Mexican gray wolves, citing their threat to livestock and game.

Wildlife advocates oppose the legislation, warning it could trigger the animals’ extinction by ending federal oversight, exposing them to Arizona’s shoot-on-sight laws, and cutting compensation for livestock losses.

Tensions over wolf reintroduction have also flared in New Mexico, with Catron and Sierra counties declaring disasters and urging the state to stop federal releases and kill wolves that attack livestock.

The population of Mexican gray wolves in the U.S. currently numbers 286.

In Glendale, two sites are planned, including one set to open in September at Desert Garden Elementary and another planned for the Glencroft Center for Modern Aging retirement community.

In Mesa, three sites are scheduled to open in September.

Last week, Glendale’s planning commission recommended approval of the proposed preschool at the Glencroft Center, which would repurpose 7,800 square feet of unused space for classrooms and offices.
