Article Icon 1Rural Areas to Get Internet Boost

The state Attorney General’s Office reached an $8 million settlement with Frontier Communications and Verizon to improve internet and phone service in Navajo and Apache counties.

State Attorney General Kris Mayes called the move a major step toward reliable service and public safety in underserved areas, including Holbrook, Snowflake, and Show Low.

The agreement requires investments in rural broadband, improved fiber reliability, and enhanced internet access. Verizon, which is in the process of purchasing Frontier, must also work to fix the causes of 911 outages.

Queen Creek began offering reimbursements of up to $5,000 for residents who replace grass with desert-friendly landscaping.

The town also launched a program that offers up to 50% reimbursement for businesses that install water-saving irrigation controls and other efficiency devices. Businesses can receive up to $20,000 per property.

The water-saving projects must be within town limits and completed by March 1.

The xeriscaping incentives cover $2 per square foot or 75% of the costs. Applicants must go through a pre-approval process.

A group of adults with disabilities completed a 220-mile, 10-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon as part of Ability 360‘s recreational therapy program.

Each participant was paired with a volunteer for support on the river and trails, with outfitters supplying discounted adaptive gear. Watch footage of their trip here.

Among the participants was Kelley Parker, whose right leg was amputated after a car crash. A disability “will not define my life,” said Parker, who uses a prosthetic leg and notes that her next goal is to run again.
