Officer-Involved Shooting Shuts Down US 60

Both directions of US 60 between Loop 101 and Country Club Drive in Mesa were closed for hours Sunday night after a domestic violence call escalated into a police chase and officer-involved shooting.

No officers were injured. A 37-year-old man shot by police was hospitalized and is expected to survive. The incident was the 20th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County this year and the 43rd statewide.

Authorities said that officers pursuing the man’s vehicle initially attempted a PIT maneuver, or Precision Immobilization Technique, which was unsuccessful.

The man later abandoned his truck, fled on foot, and reached toward his waistband, prompting an officer to shoot him, authorities said. Attempts to use a Taser failed, they said.

Scottsdale Named Nation’s Most Pet-Friendly

The other top five cities are Tampa, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Portland, Oregon.

Scottsdale also earned high marks for its number of pet businesses and animal shelters per capita.

Phoenix placed 18th overall, while Tucson and Mesa ranked lower.
