‘Doomsday Mom’ Trial Begins

Jury selection began Monday in Maricopa County for the trial of “Doomsday Mom” Lori Daybell, charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the 2019 shooting death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. Watch the report.

Daybell is already serving a life sentence in Idaho for murdering her two youngest children, J.J. Vallow and Tylee Ryan, while also conspiring to kill her fifth husband’s ex-wife.

In 2018, she met doomsday-fiction author Chad Daybell, and the pair allegedly held apocalyptic beliefs that prosecutors say were used to justify the killings.

Daybell is acting as her own attorney, though she has court-appointed legal advisors available at her discretion. The trial is expected to last up to six weeks.

Grijalva Will Run for Late Father’s Seat

Adelita Grijalva, the daughter of late Tucson congressman Raúl Grijalva, announced she will run for her father’s former 7th Congressional District seat. Watch her announcement.

Raúl Grijalva died in March after a long battle with cancer. Adelita Grijalva said she will resign from the Pima County Board of Supervisors to pursue the Democratic Party’s nomination for the seat.

As of Monday afternoon, 28 candidates had filed statements of interest in the position, including Daniel Hernandez, a Democratic former state lawmaker, and Daniel Butierez, a Republican who faced Raúl Grijalva in the last general election.

The special election to fill the seat will start with a primary election on July 15 followed by a general election on Sept. 23.

IKEA and The Cheesecake Factory Top Surprise’s Wish List

Surprise received more than 4,000 votes in its 2025 Retail Survey, with IKEA and The Cheesecake Factory selected as the retailer and restaurant residents would most like to come to the area.

Others to make the wish list included Cracker Barrel and Whole Foods.

The annual survey also lets participants name their favorite existing retailer and restaurant.

Voters picked Bonfire Craft Kitchen & Taphouse as their favorite existing restaurant, while Giftive Hallmark, formerly known as Karen’s Hallmark, was chosen as the favorite existing retailer. See the full list here.
