Answer: 1899. Dr. Hiram Fenner purchased the state’s first car, a locomobile steamer. He also became the first person to crash a car in Arizona when he ran the locomobile into a saguaro cactus while showing off its speed. The car was later sold and then demolished after it overheated and exploded.
