Article Icon 1Charlie Kirk Assassinated

Scottsdale resident Charlie Kirk, a radio show host and CEO of conservative youth nonprofit Turning Point USA, died after he was shot in the neck at an event on Wednesday at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The death of the 31-year-old husband and father of two was announced by President Trump, who said, “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.”

Arizona political leaders condemned the shooting, and close political ally and governor candidate U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Mesa, called Kirk “an inspiration to an entire generation.”

Kirk’s wife, Erika Frantzve, is a podcaster and former Miss Arizona USA, and Turning Point USA’s main office is in Phoenix. The group claims more than 250,000 student members nationwide, including chapters at Arizona’s major universities.

A manhunt for the gunman was ongoing Wednesday night.

The family of an Arizona inmate accused of using forged court documents to gain his early release maintains the documents are legitimate. “They’re definitely real,” the man’s daughter said.

Authorities say inmate David Cramer used the documents to trick officials into releasing him two decades early from a 30-year sentence for a 2014 kidnapping.

Cramer was released in June after submitting papers that appear to bear Judge Joseph Welty’s signature. Cramer was rearrested at his home on Aug. 20, and the state Attorney General’s Office is now investigating.

Arizona could soon offer a one-year criminal law program, enabling graduates to represent clients in criminal cases under the supervision of an experienced attorney.

Supporters call the proposal an innovative solution to the state’s lawyer shortage, particularly for rural areas where attorneys per capita rank near the bottom nationally. Critics argue that the program would provide insufficient training.

The program would focus exclusively on criminal law, requiring 30 credits of coursework compared with the more expansive, traditional three-year Juris Doctor degree that covers multiple areas of law.

The proposal is part of a broader effort to increase the number of lawyers in the state, which includes the launch of a part-time online program by Arizona State University.
