Grijalva Sworn In

U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Tucson, was sworn into Congress in a ceremony Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who had said he would conduct the swearing-in once the House returned to open session with a deal to end the partial federal government shutdown, praised Grijalva and her father, the late U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva.

Grijalva won a special election in September to fill the seat of her late father.

In her first remarks from the floor, Grijalva criticized President Trump and Republicans over immigration enforcement policies, failure to extend higher Affordable Care Act subsidies, and other issues. Her arrival cuts the GOP majority to 219-214.

Freshman Gains National Attention

Arizona men’s basketball player and Gilbert native Koa Peat was named CBS Sports’ freshman of the week after a standout debut.

Peat tallied 30 points, seven rebounds, and three steals in the Wildcats’ win over defending national champion Florida, and followed that up in his next game with 18 points against Utah Tech.

CBS Sports called his opening performance “the most impressive showing of almost any player in the country.”

Peat is part of No. 5 Arizona’s star-studded recruiting class that includes Brayden Burries, Dwayne Aristode, and Bryce James.

Ironman Ending Long Run in Tempe

Ironman will host its final Tempe triathlon after two decades of the competition.

First held in 2005, the Tempe race attracts athletes from around the world with its flat, fast course and scenic desert-urban route.

Last year, the event was chosen as the third-best race in North America in the Ironman Athletes’ Choice Awards.

Race organizers and Tempe officials cited the impact of urban growth on the course as the main reason to discontinue the event.
