Record Drug Bust Extends into Arizona

A record drug bust across Arizona and four other states led to 16 arrests and the seizure of 3 million pills laced with fentanyl, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Those arrested included Sinaloa cartel leader Heriberto Salazar Amaya, 36, a Mexican national, who was taken into custody in Salem, Oregon.

“This wasn’t just a bust. It was a battlefield victory against a terrorist-backed network pumping death into our cities,” said Robert Murphy, principal deputy administrator at the Drug Enforcement Administration. The amount of fentanyl seized was a DEA record.

In Phoenix, authorities confiscated 13 kilograms of fentanyl, 72 pounds of meth, 2.4 pounds of heroin, 5 kilograms of cocaine, and nearly $400,000 in cash. The other states involved were Oregon, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada.

Waymo to Double Driverless Fleet 

Waymo plans to double its robotaxi production at its Mesa factory, boosting the company’s driverless fleet to more than 3,500 vehicles. 

The company plans to assemble an additional 2,000 Jaguar electric I-PACE vehicles by the end of 2026, adding to the company’s existing fleet of 1,500 robotaxis.

Waymo’s recently built 239,000-square-foot Mesa facility features an automated assembly line capable of building tens of thousands of cars each year. The company will partner with Canadian auto parts supplier Magna on its growth plans. 

Waymo provides more than 250,000 trips each week across its current markets in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.

Study: 1 in 4 Golfers Get Skin Cancer

A study shows golfers are more prone to skin cancer than the general population, particularly in states like Arizona with plenty of sunshine. 

The research found that 27% of golfers have been diagnosed with skin cancer compared to 7% of the general population. 

Dr. Mark Gimbel, a surgical oncologist, recently spent the day with Arizona State University’s golf team to offer sun safety tips, such as applying sunscreen and wearing long sleeves and hats. Watch.

The findings mirror a 2023 study in Australia about the skin cancer risks faced by golfers in that country.
