Bridge Collapse Cleanup Awarded Funds

Gov. Katie Hobbs authorized emergency state funding and resources to assist with debris cleanup and removal of a wooden bridge that burned and collapsed into the Colorado River earlier this month.

The Oxbow Bridge near Cibola in La Paz County collapsed during a wildfire. The bridge connects a rural area of the state to California and serves as a crossing for emergency service providers.

Hobbs’ declaration allocates $200,000 from the state’s general fund to aid efforts to remove debris, which poses environmental and safety risks for the river.

Immigration Fugitive Killed During Arrest

An armed fugitive linked to immigration smuggling was shot and killed after pulling a gun on federal agents Tuesday afternoon in Chandler, authorities said.

The unnamed man was wanted for a federal probation violation related to an “alien smuggling” case.

Agents tried to stop the man with less-lethal methods after he fled a traffic stop, but he drew a gun and officers fired in response, authorities said. No officers were injured.

The arrest led police to issue a road closure warning near Price and Germann roads in Chandler.

Trash Trucks Add Battery Fire Detectors

Garbage trucks in Goodyear have been equipped with heat- and fire-detecting cameras to protect against improperly discarded lithium-ion batteries.

The cameras alert drivers when a load exceeds 200 degrees.

The new technology arrives in a year when Goodyear has already seen three trash truck fires. Nationally, fires occur at more than 1,500 landfills and other waste collection sites a year, with about 35% involving collection vehicles.

Lithium-ion batteries can be safely recycled at retailers such as Staples, Batteries Plus, and Home Depot.
