On this day in 1887, Tucson was heavily shaken by a major earthquake, which is often cited as the most significant, if not one of the first major recorded seismic events, to cause damage in Arizona. Records and sources vary on the magnitude, with most sources citing that it was between 7.2 and 7.6 magnitude.

Officials Encourage Wildfire Season Preparedness

A 215-acre wildfire burning near Little Spring in northern Arizona is a reminder that fire season hasn’t waited for summer.

The Dane Fire, which broke out May 1, is now 70% contained after crews stopped its forward progress Friday—no homes or communities are under immediate threat.

Although wildfire season is year-round in Arizona, as temperatures rise, the risk becomes greater. Phoenix Fire Department officials are reporting more activity in the past two weeks than during last summer and are urging Arizonans to prepare now before peak wildfire season hits. That means clearing defensible space around your home, cleaning gutters, and removing fuel beds that could feed a fire.

In anticipation of the state’s wildfire season, the Prescott Regional Airport will serve as a key wildfire response hub for Northern Arizona, hosting the U.S. Forest Service’s Prescott Fire Center, which deploys air tankers, helicopters, and approximately 160 personnel during peak operations amid widespread drought conditions across the state.

SRP Lights Up Navajo Nation Homes

In 2026, close to 10,000 homes in northern Arizona still have no electricity—most of them on the Navajo Nation.

Salt River Project (SRP) just wrapped a two-week mission on the reservation, working with the Tuba City Tribal Utility Office. The project is called “Light Up Navajo VII,” an initiative of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority in partnership with the American Public Power Association. In this latest effort, crews installed 153 power poles, eight transformers, and 84,000 feet of line to connect nine homes to the grid.

The effort involves more than 300 electric lineworkers representing utilities and agencies from 24 states to provide electric service to Navajo households for the first time.

“It’s been a long journey to get power,” said resident Anneretta Dove. “Our upcoming generation will have it easier.”

SRP has been making these trips since 2019, connecting 128 homes before this run—a steady partnership built on community trust and tribal cooperation.
