Article Icon 1Controller’s Quick Action Prevents Flight Collision

Two American Airlines planes sharing the same flight number, 2482, narrowly avoided a potential midair collision over Phoenix shortly after midnight Friday, thanks to an air traffic controller’s quick intervention.

Weather delays in Chicago led the airline to use a substitute aircraft for the outbound leg, putting one plane arriving at and another departing from Sky Harbor under identical call signs.

The controller distinguished the flights as “on approach” and “on departure,” holding them at separate altitudes until the conflict cleared, as heard in ATC audio. All 295 passengers landed safely.

The FAA is investigating, and American Airlines says it is reviewing the incident.

Article Icon 1Arizona Tourism Jobs on the Rise

Arizona’s travel sector supported roughly 326,000 jobs in 2025, a record high, even as domestic overnight visitation declined, according to new state data.

The Arizona Office of Tourism counted 326,359 jobs directly or indirectly tied to travel, about a 0.5% increase over 2024. Tourism tax revenue rose by a similar margin.

Domestic overnight travel fell 1.7% to roughly 40 million visitors. International trips, which the state did not break out, accounted for about 12% of total tourism.

The state’s tourism economy has benefited from a steady increase in both domestic and international visitors. California, New York, and Florida sent the most U.S. visitors; Mexico, Canada, and the U.K. led internationally.

Article Icon 16 Arizona Cities Rank Among Nation’s 30 Happiest

Arizona is home to six of the 30 happiest cities in America, according to a new WalletHub analysis.

Scottsdale placed highest at No. 3 nationally, followed by Gilbert at No. 9, Chandler at No. 14, Tempe at No. 20, Peoria at No. 23, and Mesa at No. 29.

WalletHub evaluated more than 180 large U.S. cities across 29 indicators drawn from positive-psychology research, including depression rates, income growth, and average daily leisure time.

Analyst Chip Lupo noted that income boosts happiness only up to roughly $75,000 annually, and that factors like commutes, weather, and community matter more.
