Article Icon 1Recovery Ongoing After Deadly Flooding

Recovery and cleanup efforts continued after flash flooding from storms late last week into Saturday left at least four people dead and others missing in the state.

You can watch more videos of the flooding here.

Three deaths were confirmed in Globe, and a fourth in Scottsdale, where a man’s vehicle was submerged in eight feet of water. Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency.

Globe’s floodwaters swept nearly 1,000 propane tanks from a distribution facility. Elsewhere, about 20 stranded tourists on the Havasupai Reservation were safely evacuated.

The Arizona National Guard worked alongside other rescue teams to find victims and stabilize conditions statewide, while good Samaritans rescued Valley drivers trapped by floodwaters.

More than 250 state legislative bills became law on Friday, including measures on public safety, education, sports funding, and future transportation initiatives.

New state laws raise the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 21, expand mandatory child abuse reporting in schools, and allow felony charges for gang-style assaults.

Other legislation from the session that ended in June included approval of $1.2 billion in city and state sales tax revenue for renovations at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Elsewhere, lawmakers set aside $2 million to begin planning infrastructure for flying cars, air taxis, and similar vehicles.

Starbucks will close at least seven Phoenix-area stores as part of its larger move to lay off 900 non-retail employees and close hundreds of stores in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

The Arizona stores are located in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tempe.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the global closures target underperforming stores and are part of a $1 billion restructuring with a goal of “getting back to Starbucks.”

In North America, the company expects to move forward with about 18,300 stores, down from 18,734 as of June 29.
