Article Icon 1Rachel’s Remnants Soak State

Remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel swept across Arizona over the weekend, triggering a ground stop at Sky Harbor and dumping as much as 1.22 inches of rain on parts of the East Valley.

The FAA halted traffic into Phoenix Sky Harbor until 9:45 a.m. Sunday due to strong winds. By early afternoon, 278 flights were delayed and 17 canceled.

In Avondale, a Saturday dust storm tore through the Desert West farmers market, bending tents and destroying products as vendors scrambled to help one another.

Forecasters posted flood watches across northern and western Arizona into early Monday, and more showers are expected Monday and Tuesday.

Article Icon 1Giles’ Tickets Draw Scrutiny

Gov. Katie Hobbs’ running mate John Giles faced questions over traffic citations from his time as Mesa mayor, all of which were dismissed.

Mesa municipal court records show most of the tickets were issued in 2021 and 2022, with another from this past February and red-light citations from 2021 and 2023.

The records do not explain why the tickets were dismissed.

Giles called the scrutiny political. He did not address the red-light violations. He campaigned with Hobbs in Casa Grande on Thursday.

Article Icon 1Most Frat Suspensions Lifted

The University of Arizona lifted activity suspensions for 16 fraternities Friday, four days after ordering a pause pending a review of misconduct reports at a number of its 21 fraternities.

The 16 fraternities were cleared after their advisors met with Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman.

Five others remain suspended pending further investigation into allegations of hazing, assault, and unsafe conditions.

Four chapters are already on probation through May 2027, and one lost university recognition. The university warned that more violations would bring further action.
