Pima County joined Chicago and Denver in a lawsuit against the federal government to recoup more than $12 million spent on migrant shelters.

The lawsuit accuses the government of failing to uphold commitments made under the Biden administration.

The U.S. Department of Education under the Trump administration rescinded a record $37.7 million fine against Grand Canyon University. The fine was imposed in 2023 under the Biden administration.

In clearing the university of wrongdoing, an education department spokeswoman alleged that the lawsuit was based on political and religious bias. GCU is the nation’s largest Christian university.

GCU President Brian Mueller said in a release that the school welcomed the dismissal, saying the facts “clearly support our contention that we were wrongly accused.”

The fine was levied over allegations that the school misled doctoral students about program costs,
a claim GCU denied in its appeal.

A 77-year-old Vietnam veteran was among the more than 21,000 Arizona State students to receive a degree in the school’s largest-ever graduating class over the weekend.

Wayne Johnson graduated with a master’s degree in international affairs, 52 years after earning his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University.

Johnson said his age was not a factor when it came to continuing his education, particularly since the subject matter aligned with his military experience and interests.

As for his future plans, Johnson said, “I’m just going to see what happens. They have awakened a desire in me to do more.”
