Lawmakers React to Iran Strikes

Arizona elected officials offered mixed reactions after Iran’s supreme leader was killed Saturday as part of a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran.

Among those issuing statements, U.S. Rep. Abe Hamadeh, R-Phoenix, backed the military action, saying the Iranian people “deserve the dignity of freedom.”

U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego questioned the lack of congressional approval and warned against an extended battle.

Photo Radar May Go to Voters

A proposal advancing in the state Senate could send the future of photo-radar cameras to voters in November, requiring cities to remove them within 90 days if they are not approved locally.

Sponsored by Sen. Wendy Rogers, R-Flagstaff, the proposal was scaled back from a statewide ban to mandate local voter approval every 10 years instead.

The push comes after years of legislative clashes, including Gov. Katie Hobbs’ past vetoes of a ban, citing research that the cameras improve safety and allow more efficient use of police resources.

Several Valley cities use photo enforcement, including Tempe, which issued more than 21,000 tickets in its first three months and reported a 20% crash reduction at camera intersections. Critics cite concerns about privacy and cities prioritizing revenue generation from fines.

Cooldown Ahead After Record February Heat

Temperatures in the Phoenix area are expected to drop into the 80s and 70s this week after a record-breaking February heat wave across Arizona.

Phoenix Sky Harbor hit 92 degrees Friday and Saturday, tying the all-time February record.

The unseasonably warm temperatures have forced Yuma lettuce farmers to accelerate harvest schedules, shifting to early morning and overnight work to protect crop quality.

The heat also prompted state wildlife officials to warn of increased rattlesnake activity.
