More Crews Join Pocket Fire Effort

More resources arrived to fight the Pocket Fire about 7 miles north of Sedona, with the fire growing to more than 500 acres and Oak Creek Canyon still under evacuation orders.

A Northern Arizona Type 3 team handed off command to Southwest Area Incident Management Team 2, and resources grew to seven Hotshot crews, 13 engines, and six helicopters, with Chinooks scooping water from the Sedona Wetlands Preserve.

Crews braced for hot, dry conditions and strong afternoon winds over the weekend. They’re working to keep the blaze west of State Route 89A and are positioned at Slide Rock State Park and Seven Canyons Golf Club to protect structures in the canyon.

State Route 89A remains closed between Fort Tuthill and the north end of Sedona, and a Red Cross shelter opened at Sedona Red Rock High School.

Vance Postpones Visit

Vice President JD Vance postponed his planned appearance today in Oro Valley to fly to Switzerland for a new round of negotiations with Iran.

The Arizona Republican Party confirmed the cancellation, saying the southern Arizona event would be rescheduled but giving no new date.

Vance’s stop was scheduled to take place at Roche Tissue Diagnostics in Oro Valley this morning, where he was expected to campaign for Republicans.

Race On To Save Space Telescope

A Flagstaff company designed the spacecraft NASA will use to try to catch and boost a space telescope into a higher orbit before it falls back to Earth.

Katalyst Space Technologies built LINK, a servicing craft designed to rendezvous with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and nudge it into a more stable orbit. Swift, which studies gamma-ray bursts, has a significant risk of uncontrolled reentry later this year.

The rescue mission is set to launch Saturday aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket mounted on Stargazer, the last Lockheed L-1011 still flying.

It would be the first time a private spacecraft attempts to capture a U.S. government satellite. If it works, the mission could open the door to routine robotic servicing of NASA’s orbiting fleet.
