Article Icon 1‘Six Triple Eight’ Vet Honored

The last surviving member of the “Six Triple Eight,” a World War II battalion that cleared a massive mail backlog to boost soldier morale, was honored by the Phoenix Veterans Affairs with a plaque dedication.

Fannie Griffin-McClendon, 104, a longtime resident of Tempe, served in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a mostly black female unit that deployed to Europe in early 1945.

Griffin-McClendon’s story inspired the Netflix film The Six Triple Eight. She later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired as a major.

The battalion worked in three shifts around the clock in rat-infested warehouses to sort mail that was delayed by advancing troops, incomplete addresses, and duplicate names.
