Article Icon 1Speedboat Flips in Record Attempt

A high-speed boating run at Lake Havasu took a dangerous turn when a speedboat flipped while trying to break a record on Saturday. The two racers aboard suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened as Freedom Once Racing members tried to surpass a record speed of 206 mph. As their boat topped 200 mph, wind sent the vessel airborne.

The 10,000-horsepower speedboat, a 388 Skater, was one of many participating in the Desert Storm Shootout over the weekend.

Veteran boat racer Jeff Clark credited the watercraft’s design for saving the racers’ lives. “Those guys are alive for one reason and one reason only,” he said. “That boat was built not to come apart.”

Suárez came into the game hitting .136 in his previous 75 plate appearances. In a recent meeting, he assured team manager Torey Lovullo that a breakout game was coming.

The home runs came against the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field and traveled a combined 1,655 feet, with the longest a 443-foot shot to center for his third homer.

The veteran third baseman’s efforts kept the game close, but the Diamondbacks lost 8-7 in 10 innings.
