Article Icon 1 Heat-Sick Hikers, Stuck Paraglider Rescued

Phoenix fire crews rescued a family of 11 after some in the group suffered heat exhaustion while hiking Sunday on a South Mountain trail that was posted as closed due to the day’s extreme heat.

Earlier in the day, fire crews responded to North Mountain to rescue a paraglider who was stuck on a power line.

A third rescue involved a 55-year-old man who suffered heat exhaustion while hiking Dreamy Draw Park.

On South Mountain, the family began its hike about 10 a.m. and, by noon, the heat overwhelmed some of the youth. Firefighters used rapid cooling and carried down two children using a rescue basket. All were treated at the scene.
